Are you trying to decide if Sculptra Aesthetic is right for you? Get answers to some common questions about this revolutionary new anti-aging treatment.
What is Sculptra Aesthetic?
Sculptra Aesthetic is an injectable, biocompatible dermal filler made up of poly-L-lactic acid, or PLLA. PLLA has been used safely for medical purposes for decades and as a facial injectable since 1999 in Europe. Since 2004, it has been used in the United States as a dermal filler to help decrease the appearance of lines and wrinkles around the nose and mouth.
How does Sculptra Aesthetic work?
The gradual loss of collagen that occurs with age is what causes lines to form around your nose and mouth. Sculptra Aesthetic helps to replace lost collagen, restoring fullness to both shallow and deep facial wrinkles and folds. These results develop gradually over time and can last up to two years.
Is Sculptra Aesthetic FDA approved?
Yes. The FDA has approved Sculptra Aesthetic for the correction of shallow to deep nasolabial fold (smile lines) and other facial wrinkles.
Who is a good candidate for Sculptra Aesthetic?
Sculptra Aesthetic may be right for you if you want gradual improvement that is not obvious to friends and family. This is a popular option for people who want to avoid looking like they’ve “had work done.” Talk to a trained provider about your individual goals, risks, and what results you may expect.
What are the treatments like?
An individual Sculptra Aesthetic treatment usually takes 15-30 minutes. Immediately before treatment, the treatment area will be cleaned with an antiseptic and a local anesthetic may be administered. Then, using a very fine needle, Sculptra Aesthetic is injected in small amounts beneath the surface of the skin in a grid pattern. After the treatment session, the areas where you were injected will be massaged to encourage equal distribution of the product.
Most people are able to return to normal activities immediately after a treatment session.
How many treatments are needed?
Your results will develop over a few weeks following your injection. After that time (usually about three weeks), your doctor will determine if additional injections are needed. On average, 3 treatments sessions are given over the course of a few months. A single regimen can include up to 4 individual treatment sessions.
Are there any side effects associated with Sculptra Aesthetic?
Immediately following a treatment, you may experience bleeding, itching, redness, swelling, pain, or bruising in the treated area. These signs usually go away in a few hours to a few days. Applying an ice pack within the first 24 hours after treatment can help reduce swelling. In rare cases, physicians have reported the development of nodules or papules in the treated area. Your physician will provide you with after-care instructions to help reduce the risk of side effects and discomfort.
