 Tummy Tuck

Also known as Abdominoplasty

What is Tummy Tuck?

Tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a plastic surgery procedure that removes excess skin and excess fat while tightening the abdominal muscles that can become loose or torn during events such as pregnancy and childbirth.

In Alameda and Brentwood, Dr. Rex Moulton-Barrett performs abdominoplasty to provide results that are only achievable with surgical intervention. A tummy tuck is a popular procedure that can help overweight patients experience lasting weight loss that cannot otherwise be achieved by diet and exercise.

Good Candidates for Tummy Tucks

The best candidates for tummy tuck surgery should consider cosmetic surgery to address issues with unwanted tissue that cannot be addressed with diet and exercise. A tummy tuck should complement traditional weight loss efforts, as it is not a weight loss solution on its own.

People who are in good overall health, have sagging skin or other cosmetic concerns about their midsection, and are non-smokers are the best candidates for abdominoplasties. Only a consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Rex Moulton-Barrett can confirm or deny whether your individual conditions qualify you for this procedure.

What to Expect During the Tummy Tuck Procedure?

A tummy tuck is a highly effective way of removing excess fat and skin around the abdomen. Plastic surgeons can remove excess tissue and tighten stomach muscles to help patients achieve a flat, firm stomach with minimal scarring. Find out more about what tummy tuck procedure is best for you. There are two main types of abdominoplasty.

Traditional Abdominoplasty

A complete abdominoplasty is a more invasive procedure than a partial abdominoplasty, or mini tummy tuck. A full tummy tuck will allow patients to achieve the most dramatic results. An incision will be made along the entire bikini line in order to best hide scarring. A new navel will be created, and patients can expect dramatic change after the healing process is complete. As the name suggests, a complete abdominoplasty will address all areas across the abdomen. Patients can expect to lose between 15 and 20 pounds of unwanted fat and tissue after a traditional tummy tuck operation.

Mini Tummy Tuck

Many patients that are primarily concerned about fat deposits and excess tissue in the lower abdomen below the navel can achieve the right results with a partial or mini abdominoplasty. Shorter incisions are used, and the navel is not repositioned. Some partial abdominoplasties can effectively be performed using minimally invasive endoscopic surgical techniques.

What to Expect During Tummy Tuck Recovery

Recovery time varies based on patient-specific variables and the type of abdominoplasty performed. Proper care at home is essential. Patients should have someone stay with them after surgery for at least 24 hours to ensure they have help with necessary activities. You will sleep in an elevated position with your feet slightly elevated to reduce the stress on your incisions.

Taking short walks without fully straightening up is recommended to encourage good circulation. You will also wear a compression garment throughout the treatment area to help ensure there’s no loose skin or other non-intended results from the surgery. You may need to monitor drains that have been placed at the incision site to drain excess fluid from the treated tissues.

Upon full recovery, about 6-8 weeks following the surgery, patients can expect lasting results from the right tummy tuck that would not be achievable with diet and exercise alone.
