Abdominosplsty, or more commonly referred to as a tummy tuck procedure, is a cosmetic surgery procedure designed to remove excess skin and fat from the abdominal area. During a tummy tuck procedure, your Oakland surgeon will give your belly area a tighter appearance by making an incision beneath the hips to contour the skin and muscle.

Here are a few tips for optimizing your recovery by staying healthy and healing quickly.

After your tummy tuck surgery, you’ll want to have plenty of comfortable and loose clothing to wear for a few weeks post-surgery. Because your abdominal area will be tender and sensitive, you’ll appreciate articles of clothing that are easy to slip on and off and that don’t bind. It is a good idea to get your home prepared for your recovery too. A shower chair or hand-held shower head will make it easier for you while showering. Further, have your bedside table set up with things like a phone, reading material, TV remote, and snacks.

Because blood clots are a complication of many surgeries, including tummy tuck surgery, most patients are advised to participate in light exercise post-surgery. Light exercise not only strengthens muscles, but increases circulation as well. If you are a fit individual, you can expect to recover in less than two weeks. However, sedentary individuals will take much longer in their recovery.

Once your area is healed, you may be interested in knowing if there is anything you can do about scarring. For example, you may be given a topical ointment that is applied directly to the incision area to minimize cosmetic surgery procedure scarring. Laser skin resurfacing and steroid injections are other procedures that are available to help remove surgery-associated scars.
